My current body of work is a series of portraits taken from a range of sources, intimate in-person sittings and photo shoots to archival mug shots from institutions. Born into a working-class family in rural Kansas, most of my inspiration comes from my heritage and upbringing. I am exploring the complexities of my family members and the roles that they have played in my life and each others’ lives, particularly in my series of mug shots featuring my uncles and cousin.
The reason I paint in general and the reason I paint people is because I am drawn to who the individual is and how I connect, relate and interpret them. My portraits, of both family and friends, are straightforward and honest, close to life-size, and reduced down to their essential elements to tell that person’s story.
